The funeral of the late Raila Odinga brought together some of Kenya's most unlikely combinations of political figures in one space, and George Wajackoyah has revealed that his seating arrangement with former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i produced one of the more quietly awkward moments of that solemn occasion.
Wajackoyah disclosed the encounter during his appearance on Citizen TV's Sunday Live, where he had already been speaking candidly about his turbulent history with Matiang'i dating back to the 2022 presidential campaigns.
The two men have history that is not easily forgotten. Matiang'i had publicly threatened to have Wajackoyah jailed over his marijuana legalisation campaign platform.
Wajackoyah fired back the following day, told him to shut up, reminded him that he was a presidential candidate while Matiang'i was merely a government appointee, and turned the threat around by warning that a Wajackoyah presidency would see Matiang'i behind bars instead.
Against that backdrop, finding themselves seated together at Raila's burial was clearly not something either man had planned for.
According to Wajackoyah, when Matiang'i realised who was sitting beside him, his response was telling. He shifted his chair.
The detail is small but it says everything about the unresolved tension between two men who exchanged very public threats and have not had the kind of formal reconciliation that would make sharing a seat feel comfortable.
Despite the awkward funeral moment, Wajackoyah maintains he holds no lasting bitterness and says he remains open to conversation with Matiang'i.
