According to insiders, the strike was primarily driven by Form 3 students, with support from Form 2s, while Form 4 candidates deliberately kept off the chaos and even protected their classrooms from destruction. Students say the riot stemmed from unresolved grievances from a previous strike, worsened by what they describe as the arrogant and abusive conduct of Principal Mr. Sang.
They accuse Mr. Sang of shielding a teacher, Mr. Mitei, whom they blame as the root cause of earlier unrest, despite repeated calls for TSC to intervene and possibly transfer him. When questioned about the issue, the principal allegedly dismissed the concerns and told the boys that Mr. Mitei was “going nowhere.”
Since then, Sang is said to have become excessively strict and petty. After parents opposed corporal punishment, he allegedly turned to frequent suspensions, even for minor infractions that students felt could have been resolved through dialogue. In one incident a few months ago, the entire Form 2 class was reportedly punished collectively for unclear reasons, further fuelling anger.
By last week, students had already started planning what they termed a “forced half-term,” but their warnings went ignored by the administration. Sunday night’s chaos was, therefore, the breaking point.
Now, students are demanding that Mr. Sang, Mr. Mitei, and the entire school administration step aside, accusing them of presiding over declining academic performance and creating a hostile learning environment.
