The suspect, identified as Gift Lugendo Opiyo, is accused of walking into the station unprovoked on the afternoon of September 22, approaching the officer who was on duty at the report desk, and forcefully embracing her before allegedly caressing her breasts.
According to court filings, the officer was on a phone call when the incident occurred. Stunned by the sudden assault, she immediately ended the call and confronted the suspect. However, instead of apologizing, Opiyo reportedly grew combative, insisting that she could do nothing to him.
His defiance triggered a swift response from fellow officers, who restrained and arrested him on the spot.
He was later charged with committing an indecent act, a serious offense under Kenyan law that carries heavy penalties.Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich at the Makadara Law Courts, Opiyo denied the charges.
He was released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 or an alternative bond of Sh100,000, pending trial.
The case has been scheduled for mention on October 15as authorities prepare for a full hearing. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers, even within their own stations, and highlighted the increasing boldness of some offenders.
Police have reiterated their commitment to protecting their officers and ensuring that acts of harassment, regardless of where they occur, are met with firm legal action.
