Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has publicly criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta following remarks he made during the burial of the late Cyrus Jirongo. Ngunyi questioned Uhuru’s growing public political involvement after leaving office.
According to Ngunyi, a former head of state should preserve dignity and restraint even after retirement. He argued that Uhuru risks losing the authority that comes with silence and distance from daily politics.
In a strongly worded message shared online, Ngunyi warned Uhuru against openly aligning himself with opposition politics. He suggested that influence is often stronger when exercised quietly rather than through public appearances and statements.
Ngunyi referenced the late former President Mwai Kibaki to support his argument. He said Kibaki never organized opposition politics against his successor, choosing instead to remain largely in the background.
The analyst claimed Uhuru would achieve more by operating from the shadows. He added that active political mobilization could weaken Uhuru’s legacy as a statesman.
Ngunyi went further to compare Uhuru’s current political posture to that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He said such a path could reduce Uhuru’s stature and public respect.
The remarks were prompted by Uhuru’s speech at Jirongo’s burial, where he issued warnings to critics and spoke firmly about political attacks. His words attracted wide attention and mixed reactions across the political divide.
Supporters of Uhuru defended his right to speak out on national issues. Others agreed with Ngunyi, saying former presidents should maintain neutrality and calm influence.
