Truphena Muthoni's bold mission to complete a 72-hour nonstop tree hugging marathon outside the Nyeri Governor's office has captured the attention and admiration of many Kenyans. But on Tuesday, her endurance faced a new challenge, heavy rain.
Rather than allowing the downpour to disrupt her marathon, kind-hearted locals quickly came to her aid. Onlookers described how several residents came into the circle with umbrellas, jackets, and makeshift covers over themselves to protect her from the rain while she remained touching the tree.
That act of solidarity ensured she could continue with the challenge without breaking the rules of her marathon.
Muthoni, having crossed the 30 hour mark by the time the rains relented, had 42 more hours to go. Her unflagging resilience mixed with that public assistance has transformed the event into a strongly symbolic gesture for unity, determination and the spirit of Nyeri residents.
Indeed, many Kenyans have since taken to social media to praise both Muthoni and the locals who stood with her literally through the storm and night.
