Why Caleb Amisi Wants Cyrus Jirongo To Be Buried With A Lighting Torch In His Coffin

MP Caleb Amisi has sparked debate after making unusual remarks about the burial of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo. He questioned why people fear symbolic gestures during burial rites.

According to Amisi, Jirongo should be buried with a lighting torch as part of his send off. He argued that death should be treated naturally and without unnecessary fear.

Speaking through his X page, Amisi used a mix of Kiswahili and English to make his point. “Jirongo azikwe na torch, ikizima izime na mtu, shida iko wapi?” he said (Let Jirongo be buried with a torch, when it goes off let it go off with someone, where is the problem).

Amisi insisted that burial customs should respect personal wishes and cultural expression. He added that symbolism has always been part of African traditions.

The lawmaker said he does not understand why such ideas make people uncomfortable. He claimed fear comes from misunderstanding rather than tradition.

Amisi's argument comes amid speculations that Jirongo's accident was not natural and that someone must have planned it.

According to the community traditions, when the torch goes off after being buried with the deceased, anyone involved with his death would die immediately.
