What Miguna Told Ruto After He Held A UDA Convention At State House

Lawyer and activist Miguna Miguna has sharply criticised President William Ruto following the hosting of a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) convention at State House, Nairobi, accusing the Head of State of abusing public institutions for partisan political purposes.

Miguna argued that State House is a public facility owned by all Kenyans and established under the Constitution strictly for official state functions. According to him, it does not belong to any political party and should not be used to advance the interests of the ruling party.

In a strongly worded statement, Miguna said that turning State House into what he termed a UDA headquarters is illegal and unconstitutional, warning that such actions blur the line between the State and party politics. He maintained that Kenya’s Constitution demands a clear separation between government resources and partisan activities to protect democracy and fairness in the political arena.

He further claimed that allowing a party convention at State House sets a dangerous precedent where public institutions can be captured and repurposed for political gain, undermining multiparty democracy and equal competition among political parties.

Miguna also pointed out that State House is funded and maintained using taxpayers’ money, insisting that no political formation whether ruling or opposition has the moral or legal right to appropriate it for party business.

The UDA convention at State House has sparked debate across the country, with critics echoing Miguna’s concerns about the use of public resources, while supporters of the government argue that the President, as both Head of State and party leader, has latitude in how he conducts political engagements.

As the debate continues, Miguna has called on Kenyans to remain vigilant and defend constitutionalism, warning that normalising such practices could weaken democratic institutions and accountability in the long run.
