Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has come out with a charged and deeply personal accusation against President William Ruto, alleging that the President harbours a genuine hatred for the Agikuyu community and that the actions of his closest allies are the clearest proof of that sentiment.
Kabando directed his anger at two specific figures in Ruto's inner circle. UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen are the men he holds responsible for what he described as ethnic attacks against an entire community. In his view, these are not rogue statements from overzealous allies. They are the voice of the presidency itself.
He did not mince his words about where he believes the orders originate. Kabando argued that Ruto has verbalised his own toxicity toward the Agikuyu, suggesting this is not a matter of reading between the lines but of taking the President at his own word.
The question he posed was pointed and deliberate. What has an entire community done to deserve this treatment from the President of their own country and the mouthpieces he deploys to speak on his behalf?
For Kabando, the answer is nothing. The attacks, he suggested, are rooted in something that has nothing to do with anything the community has said or done and everything to do with a deeper animosity that he believes Ruto has long carried.
He closed his statement with a number rather than a rallying cry. 446 days to go. It was a countdown that needed no further explanation.
For a President whose 2022 victory depended significantly on Mt Kenya support, having prominent voices from that region now openly accusing him of ethnic hostility represents a political wound that will not close quietly.
