Amount Of Money Teachers Were Allegedly Paid After Visiting State House

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairman, Omboko Milemba, has confirmed that teachers who attended a recent meeting at State House each received Ksh.10,000 as what he termed a “reimbursement.”

According to Milemba, the money was not meant to be viewed as a bribe but rather as compensation for transport and logistical costs incurred by teachers who had traveled from different parts of the country to attend the engagement with President William Ruto.

The revelation has, however, sparked mixed reactions across the education sector and the public. Some stakeholders argue that such payments raise questions about the government’s approach to teacher engagement, while others insist that it was a normal facilitation allowance.

Milemba defended the move, saying teachers had not asked for the money but were instead given the reimbursement by State House as a gesture of goodwill. He stressed that the discussions between the Head of State and teachers focused on key issues such as salary reviews, promotions, and improving working conditions, not financial handouts.

Nonetheless, critics maintain that the reimbursement risks undermining the seriousness of teacher–government negotiations, with some Kenyans suggesting that the government should prioritize fulfilling long-term promises rather than short-term cash tokens.
