Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has reignited the Mt. Kenya succession debate after boldly dismissing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claims of being the region’s kingpin. Taking to social media, Ahmednasir argued that Gachagua lacks the credibility and influence needed to rally the people of Mt. Kenya behind him.
Instead, the outspoken lawyer endorsed businessman and political strategist Jimi Wanjigi as the leader best positioned to command the support of the mountain region and unify the opposition. “Both the good people of Mt. Kenya and the opposition parties now have a credible leader to follow and rally behind. @JimiWanjigi is the right leader for Mt. Kenya. He is also the right leader for the opposition to unite and coalesce around,” Ahmednasir stated.
His remarks have stirred sharp political debate. Supporters of the Deputy President quickly came to his defense, insisting that Gachagua remains the de facto spokesperson of the region given his high-ranking position in government. On the other hand, some critics agreed with Ahmednasir, arguing that Wanjigi’s financial muscle, political connections, and reformist messaging position him as a viable alternative.
The Mt. Kenya region, long considered a political powerhouse, remains deeply divided on who should take over the mantle of leadership after the Uhuru Kenyatta era. While Gachagua has consistently branded himself as the community’s defender, Ahmednasir’s statement suggests that the kingpin race is far from settled.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the endorsement of Wanjigi by a prominent figure like Ahmednasir is expected to intensify the political contest in the mountain, setting the stage for a fierce battle of influence.
