The death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has caused a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape, and its impact is expected to be felt for a long time.
His party, ODM, is among the most affected, as it now faces the challenge of moving forward without its longtime leader. Raila had been at the helm since the party’s formation, and his absence has left a significant leadership vacuum.
Following his death, some observers claimed that the party might collapse as members could defect to other political groups. One of the main challenges facing ODM now is selecting a new leader to succeed Raila.
Recent reports indicate that some party members from Siaya, Kisumu, and Homa Bay have proposed Raila’s brother, Oburu Odinga, to take over as party leader, citing his experience and leadership capabilities.
However, this proposal has sparked mixed reactions across the country. Many Kenyans have opposed the idea, arguing that there are more suitable leaders within ODM who should be considered. Others have insisted that political leadership should not be hereditary and that Oburu should not automatically inherit the position.
Some also fear that giving the party leadership to Oburu could alienate other regions, as his influence is largely confined to Luo Nyanza, unlike Raila, who enjoyed nationwide recognition and support.
