In a statement posted online, Karungo reminded Kenyans that exactly one year ago, on the same date, the Senate impeached Gachagua while he was hospitalized. He described it as a painful moment that forever altered the former DP’s political journey and personal life.
“It was on a day like this, one year ago, that the Senate made history by impeaching the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, while he was still in a hospital bed,” part of his message read.
Karungo encouraged Kenyans to use October 17th as a day for sober reflection on issues such as leadership, justice, corruption, and accountability, rather than a time for judgment. He noted that Gachagua, though deeply saddened by Raila Odinga’s passing, chose to mourn privately and in his own way.
The senator’s comments have sparked mixed public reactions, with some expressing empathy toward Gachagua, while others accused him of using Raila’s death to revive memories of his impeachment.
