Prominent lawyer and political analyst Wahome Thuku has stirred widespread debate online after issuing a bold statement about what he expects to happen as Kenya’s week of mourning for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga comes to a close.
In his remarks, Wahome predicted that the nation will soon return to normalcy despite the emotional intensity that followed Raila’s passing and burial. He observed that even the national flags, which have been flying at half-mast in respect of the late leader, will soon be raised back to full mast as life gradually resumes its usual rhythm.
Wahome noted that Kenyans often react passionately during national tragedies by expressing deep sorrow, anger, and solidarity both online and offline but their emotions tend to fade with time.
He added that President William Ruto and other leaders are well aware of this national tendency, understanding that public mourning and outrage in Kenya rarely persist for long.
His statement has since sparked a wave of mixed reactions. Some Kenyans agreed with his honest reflection on the nation’s emotional cycle, while others criticized him for making the remarks too soon after Raila’s death, calling it insensitive.
