Three Leaders Likely To Take Over ODM Following Raila's Death - Opinion

Following the sudden death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, attention has now shifted to who might take over the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a party he founded and led for over two decades.

Among the names being widely mentioned are Babu Owino, Ali Hassan Joho, and Edwin Sifuna, three prominent figures who have long been close to Raila and enjoy significant grassroots support across the country.

Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP, has positioned himself as one of Raila’s most loyal defenders and represents a new generation of energetic leaders within ODM. His boldness and massive youth following make him a strong contender for the party’s future leadership.

Ali Hassan Joho, the former Mombasa Governor and current Cabinet Secretary, has been one of Raila’s most trusted allies from the Coast region. His national appeal, charisma and financial muscle could play a major role in keeping ODM united during this transition.

Edwin Sifuna, ODM’s Secretary General, is seen as the party’s institutional pillar. His legal expertise and organizational understanding of ODM’s internal structure give him a solid foundation to take charge.

However, analysts warn that Raila’s absence might trigger intense internal competition and power struggles as the three and possibly others seek to fill his giant political shoes. ODM is expected to hold an emergency meeting soon to chart the party’s way forward in this new chapter of Kenyan politics.
