Bad News for Samia Suluhu After Victims of Police Brutality Make a Major Move

President Samia Suluhu Hassan and several senior security officials in her administration are facing serious international scrutiny after legal representatives acting for thousands of victims of alleged police killings during Tanzania’s presidential election protests formally applied to have the matter taken up by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

According to the lawyers, families of victims who reportedly lost their lives or suffered severe injuries during the election related unrest are seeking justice beyond Tanzania’s borders, arguing that domestic mechanisms have failed to hold those responsible accountable.

The petition submitted to the ICC mentions claims of excessive force, unlawful killings, and systematic suppression of protesters, incidents that the victims' representatives believe amount to crimes against humanity.

If the ICC accepts the application it could open the door to investigations targeting not only key security officials but potentially the president herself given her constitutional role as Commander-in-Chief.

The move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing concerns surrounding Tanzania’s election period and puts additional pressure on Samia Suluhu’s administration, both locally and internationally.

The development has also sparked widespread debate, with human rights groups closely watching to see whether ICC prosecutors will move forward with the request.
