Political tension has heightened after the Narok Township Ward by-election, with new allegations from Rigathi Gachagua. The statement came after results showed the government-backed candidate had lost the seat, where Gachagua claimed people within President William Ruto's administration reacted in panic.
According to Gachagua, unnamed government operatives reportedly tried to interfere with the election materials after the defeat.
He alleged that individuals had been sent to tamper with the ballot boxes and KIEMS kits in what he termed a panicked and desperate attempt. But he added that such attempts were “too little, too late,” arguing that the people’s will had already prevailed through the ballot.
Gachagua questioned the actions of state agencies in the aftermath of the loss and accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of presiding over what he termed as unnecessary intimidation and pressure. He claimed that these tactics reflected growing frustration within the government after the unexpected defeat.
These allegations have further intensified the online debate, with Kenyans sharply divided. Some see Gachagua's claims as a daring expose, while others believe these should be subjected to proper scrutiny before being accepted as fact.
With political dust settling, focus now shifts to how the allegations will be dealt with by the various electoral bodies and relevant authorities, and whether the incident could trigger further friction within the top leadership of Kenya Kwanza.
