Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has strongly condemned the wave of violence reported during Thursday's by-elections across various constituencies, where clashes erupted in Kabuchai, Malava, and Kasipul raising national concerns over the conduct and security of the electoral process..
Sifuna characterized the incidents as "one of the bloodiest election days in recent history," while condemning the widespread unrest that left voters, observers, and candidates fearing for their safety. He argued that the level of violence seen across different polling stations pointed to either a serious breakdown in security management or possible complicity by those entrusted with ensuring order.
Sifuna said full responsibility must be borne by the Ministry of Interior and security command for what he described as clear and preventable failures. He specifically called out Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and his team, saying they had a duty to ensure the safety of all citizens taking part in the electoral process.
Sifuna said that violence, intimidation, or the mismanagement of security operations could not go hand in hand with free and fair elections. He called for an immediate, transparent probe by the authorities into the incidents to ascertain how such chaos happened on the same day in different areas.
His remarks have sparked an intense debate where many Kenyans are demanding accountability and reforms to avoid similar scenes during future elections.
