Philemon Kipruto, the sculptor who gained attention a few months ago for crafting President William Ruto's statue has sparked a debate among the public with a new artwork meant to honor the former Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
The statue, meant to honor the former Prime Minister has attracted a lot of criticism hours after photos went up online. Many Kenyans on social media said the sculpture did not look like Raila; some said it was bad work and looked more like mockery than actual celebration.
Some users lamented that the artist had failed to capture Raila’s face structure, expression, or signature features. Other Kenyans questioned the workmanship of Kipruto, adding that both the Ruto and Raila statues had given indications that he needed more training or refinement before producing works meant to honor national figures.
The criticism was, however, countered by a few who felt that sculpture was a rather difficult craft and that the artist needed encouragement, not condemnation.
Online, the debate rages on, with many calling for the statue to be redone to properly honor Raila Odinga’s legacy.
