Senator Samson Cherargei has launched a sharp attack on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, arguing that Kenyans should not rush to embrace him as a presidential hopeful without revisiting what he did while serving in the previous administration.
Cherargei accused Matiang'i of disregarding numerous court orders when he was in office, especially those touching on political rights and police conduct.
He accused the former CS of presiding over politically motivated crackdowns, the withdrawal of security from targeted leaders, and facilitating an environment where dissent was punished rather than heard.
The senator also cited the Yala killings, shutdown of major media outlets and intimidation of opposition figures as examples of actions he says cannot be overlooked now that Matiang'i is portraying an image of legality and reform.
For Cherargei, these are the unresolved issues that will markedly shape the political destiny of Matiang'i in 2027. He predicts that Matiang'i will finish last in the presidential race if he will run.
He argues that instead of ascending to the top seat, Matiang'i is likely to end up in the opposition ranks, where his influence will be limited and constantly challenged by questions about his legacy. According to the senator, Kenyans will demand accountability before entrusting him with national leadership.
