The latest wave of political tension has emerged after Senior Political Commentator Wahome Thuku claimed that President William Ruto's administration has deliberately singled out former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his DCP party for harassment and physical intimidation.
According to Thuku this trend of tear gassing, disruption of meetings and police hostility has the hallmarks of a calculated political strategy to get the opposition fractured from within.
Thuku says even in the absence of the president, especially during Ruto's current international engagements, the state machinery allegedly moves on the orders of Kithure Kindiki, ensuring that Gachagua and his party remain the number one target.
But he has observed something rather interesting, Gachagua is never attacked whenever he appears with other opposition leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka, Justin Muturi, Martha Karua or Eugene Wamalwa. Incidentally, these leaders' functions go on without incident.
He claims that this inconsistency is not an accident. Thuku says that the government's strategy is to weaken the opposition through the isolation of DCP and to make it appear as if that party faces greater threat than others.
As he explained it, this will make DCP develop a superiority complex; it would feel more important or fearless than all the rest, thus creating distrust in the bigger coalition of opposition.
He further warned that this perception war could cause DCP to resent parties like Wiper, Narc Kenya, and DAP-K for not experiencing similar hostility.
Thuku concludes that the divide and rule strategy may perhaps succeed in the event of opposition leaders failing to appreciate the ultimate goal behind this, breaking their unity from within and giving President Ruto political advantage ahead of the 2027 elections.
