Political analyst Wahome Thuku has predicted that Kenya is headed for a presidential runoff between President William Samoei Ruto and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at the end of the 2027 General Election.
Thuku made the prediction while reacting to a recent Infotrak survey that ranked President Ruto as the most preferred presidential candidate, with Matiang’i emerging second. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ranked last in the poll.
According to Thuku, the survey reflects a political reality that is slowly taking shape across the country, where the 2027 race is narrowing down to two strong national figures. He argued that neither Ruto nor Matiang’i is likely to secure an outright win in the first round.
The survey noted that President Ruto still commands a solid national support base as an incumbent, but faces growing resistance due to economic pressure and governance concerns. Thuku said these factors will prevent Ruto from crossing the 50 percent plus one threshold.
On Matiang’i, Thuku said the former CS is steadily gaining national appeal beyond his traditional support regions. He attributed Matiang’i’s rise to public frustration with the current administration and nostalgia for firm leadership.
Thuku dismissed Gachagua’s low ranking in the survey as a sign that regional politics alone will not carry weight in a national contest. He argued that voters are increasingly looking for candidates with broad national acceptance.
He further stated that a runoff would significantly reshape political alliances, forcing smaller parties and regional leaders to choose sides. Thuku added that this second round would become a referendum on Ruto’s first term in office.
The Infotrak survey has already sparked debate among political observers, with many agreeing that the 2027 election could be one of the most competitive in recent history.
