Why The 500 Shillings Note Was Nicknamed Jirongo During The Moi Era

Ever since the news of the death of former Lugari MP Hon. Cyrus Jirongo came out everyone has been talking about him.

Kenyans have remembered him and his influence in the Kenyan politics mostly during the reign of the late former president Daniel Moi.

One particular thing that Kenyans have remembered the most about him is the naming of the 500 shillings note after him.

According to old records, back in the day Jirongo took a loan of billions of money which he used to campaign for Moi.

It is reported that during the rallies he gave people 500 shilling notes that people got used to him that way.

In no time he had been known in almost every household as the man who gives out 500 shilling notes and eventually people came up with the nickname 'Jirongo' to refer to the note.

Kenyans have come out to send their condolences to the family of Jirongo. While some have praised him for the years he was in government, some have criticized him for his deeds when he had power.
