Wahome Responds To Ruto, Tells Him Why Ida Odinga Is Not Fit For UNEP Appointment

Senior lawyer Wahome Thuku has openly criticized President William Ruto fo appointing reported mama Ida Odinga to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), questioning the basis of such an appointment.

In a statement on social media, Wahome argued that representing a country at UNEP requires a proven track record in environmental matters, backed by solid experience in international diplomacy. He said such roles should be earned through merit, expertise, and long-term engagement with environmental policy.

Wahome stressed that UNEP is a serious global institution dealing with complex climate, conservation, and sustainability challenges. According to him, countries that value their international standing ensure that only individuals with clear environmental credentials are considered.

He warned against turning international appointments into political favors, saying that marital or political friendships to powerful figures should not be the qualification for global representation. Wahome described this approach as a sign of weak institutional culture.

“This is about representing a nation, not rewarding political families,” he remarked, adding that credible countries protect the integrity of such positions. He maintained that UNEP postings demand professionalism and global respect.

The lawyer further noted that Kenya, as the host country of UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, carries an even heavier responsibility to uphold high standards. Any mistakes, he said, could damage the country’s reputation on the world stage.

Wahome’s remarks have added to a growing public debate on political appointments and merit based leadership. The comments come amid heightened scrutiny of how Kenya fills influential regional and international positions.
