Political commentator Wahome Thuku has claimed that President William Samoei Ruto will not entertain any form of political handshake if he secures a second term in the 2027 General Election. Thuku said a Ruto victory would mark the end of negotiations and post election power sharing deals.
According to Thuku, even strong numbers in Parliament would not compel President Ruto to seek compromise with opponents. He argued that Ruto’s leadership style does not accommodate handshake politics, especially during a second term.
Thuku noted that only former Prime Minister Raila Odinga managed to force a handshake in the past. He attributed that outcome to sustained street protests.
He dismissed expectations that similar demonstrations could emerge after 2027. Thuku said communities such as the Kikuyu are unlikely to take to the streets, even in disputed elections.
He claimed that voting, for many, would mark the end of political participation until the next election cycle. Thuku said this reality would leave the opposition with limited options if Ruto wins.
The analyst suggested that any resistance to a second Ruto term would shift to long-term political organizing. He predicted that calls similar to Amalize Aende would resurface as early as January 2028.
Thuku said this would signal the start of another extended campaign aimed at the 2032 elections. He mentioned areas such as Githurai, Nyandarua, and Embu as key centers of political mobilization.
He argued that the next opposition strategy would rely on sustained grassroots engagement rather than immediate confrontation. According to him, the focus would be on building momentum over five years.
Thuku’s remarks come amid growing debate about post 2027 political stability. Several leaders have raised concerns about how Kenya would handle a contested outcome.
President Ruto has previously stated that he believes in constitutional processes. He has maintained that elections should be decided at the ballot and in court.
