DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has openly disagreed with Wiper party boss Kalonzo Musyoka over when the United Opposition should unveil its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. The disagreement has exposed early cracks within the coalition as it prepares to challenge President William Ruto.
According to Gachagua, the opposition should delay naming its flagbearer until a few months before the election. He argued that an early announcement would give President Ruto enough time to destabilize the chosen candidate.
Speaking during a political engagement, Gachagua said the coalition had learned from past elections. He warned that premature declarations often weaken candidates before campaigns officially begin.
Kalonzo Musyoka had earlier taken a different position on the matter. He had publicly stated that the opposition would name its presidential candidate by the first quarter of 2026.
The Wiper leader believes early clarity will help the coalition organize, mobilize supporters, and build a strong national campaign. He argued that delays could create uncertainty and internal competition.
Gachagua dismissed that approach and insisted secrecy was a strategic necessity. He said the coalition must protect its candidate from political attacks and state pressure.
The disagreement has drawn attention within political circles. Observers note that the lack of a unified position could benefit President Ruto.
President Ruto has not commented directly on the dispute. However, allies of the president have previously said the opposition remains divided and lacks clear leadership.
Political analysts say the conflicting views may slow down coalition activities. Some warn that unresolved strategy differences could weaken opposition unity.
The debate comes as opposition leaders intensify consultations ahead of 2027. Several figures are still positioning themselves for possible endorsement.
Despite the disagreement, both Gachagua and Kalonzo maintain that they remain committed to removing President Ruto from power. They insist discussions are ongoing within the coalition structures.
