Wanga Responds To Winnie Odinga, Tells Her This After Her Recent Remarks

Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga has responded to comments made by Winnie Odinga regarding early political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting that coalition-building is neither premature nor misplaced.

Wanga’s remarks come shortly after Winnie Odinga cautioned ODM leaders against rushing into early succession politics, urging the party to instead remain anchored on its core values, grassroots mobilisation, and issue-based politics. Winnie argued that premature alignment with potential allies risks distracting the party from its ideological foundation and connection with ordinary supporters.

However, in a firm but measured response, Wanga defended ongoing engagements with like-minded political partners, saying such discussions are part of ODM’s long-standing political culture. She noted that coalition building is not a new strategy but a principle consistently preached and practiced by party leader Raila Odinga over the years.

According to Wanga, engaging potential allies early helps the party shape a stronger, more cohesive political front rather than reacting late in the electoral cycle. She dismissed claims that ODM leaders are “moving too fast,” describing such accusations as hypocritical, especially coming from individuals who are themselves active in national political conversations.

The ODM chairperson emphasized that planning ahead does not mean abandoning party values or sidelining grassroots work. Instead, she argued that the two can and should run concurrently.

“Our history shows that Raila Odinga has always believed in building broad alliances based on shared values and national interest,” Wanga said, adding that preparing early helps avoid confusion and internal friction later.

Her response has reignited debate within ODM and among its supporters about the party’s direction in the post Raila political era. While some agree with Winnie Odinga’s call for restraint and ideological focus, others support Wanga’s view that early strategy and coalition talks are essential in Kenya’s highly competitive political environment.

The exchange highlights emerging generational and strategic differences within ODM as the party positions itself for life beyond Raila Odinga and prepares for the 2027 elections. Despite the differing views, both leaders maintain that their positions are aimed at strengthening the party and safeguarding its future relevance.

As internal discussions continue, ODM supporters will be watching closely to see whether the party can balance early political planning with grassroots engagement without deepening internal divisions.
