Weight Of One Tusk Of Craig, The Giant Elephant Of Amboseli

Craig, the legendary giant elephant of Amboseli National Park, was classified as a super tusker, a rare category reserved for bull elephants whose tusks are exceptionally massive and heavy. One of the most remarkable facts about Craig is the weight of a single tusk.

Each of Craig’s tusks weighed over 45 kilograms. This places him among the very few elephants in Africa whose tusks reached such extraordinary size and mass. Super tuskers are defined by this threshold, and fewer than a handful remain on the continent today, making Craig a living relic of Africa’s natural history.

Born in January 1972 to the renowned matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig lived to the age of 54, an impressive lifespan for a wild bull elephant. His long life was largely attributed to sustained conservation efforts, strict protection by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and cooperation with conservation partners and local communities around Amboseli.

Craig’s tusks were not only heavy but also long and ground sweeping, curving gracefully as he walked. Despite carrying such enormous weight, he moved calmly and steadily, earning global admiration for his gentle and composed nature. Visitors often observed him standing patiently as tourists photographed and filmed him, a behavior that made him one of the most recognizable elephants in the world.

Beyond his physical features, Craig played an important biological role. He fathered several calves, helping pass on strong genetics at a time when poaching has drastically reduced the number of big-tusked elephants.

Craig’s death marks the loss of not just an elephant, but one of the last living symbols of Africa’s super tusker legacy, defined in part by the immense weight and rarity of each of his tusks.
