Face Of The Kenyan Girl Forced To Be A Sex Worker After Travelling To India

A Kenyan nurse’s dream of securing a better future for her children has turned into a nightmare after she fell victim to human trafficking in India.

Ms. Purity Cherono, a mother of two from Rongai, Nakuru County, left Kenya in July after being promised a nursing job abroad. Struggling with casual work, the offer appeared to be a golden opportunity to uplift her family.

However, upon arrival in India, her hopes were quickly shattered. Ms. Cherono revealed that she was coerced into sex work a job she never signed up for.

“I was very excited about the opportunity, but after I arrived, I fell sick and couldn’t work. When I recovered, they transferred me to another city where I was shown the nature of the job. I was shocked because that was not what we had agreed back in Kenya,” she explained.

Her passport was confiscated when she resisted, leaving her stranded and vulnerable. Traffickers are now allegedly demanding KSh 500,000 for her release.

“I have never been a sex worker. I only travelled with hopes of giving my children a better future,” she added.

Ms. Cherono is currently stuck in India without food or rent and has made a desperate appeal to Kenyans and the government to help facilitate her return home.

Human rights groups have since warned of the growing number of Kenyans, particularly women, being lured abroad with false promises of employment only to end up trapped in human trafficking syndicates.
