According to Makau Mutua, the move to step down was long overdue. He argued that Kahiga’s comments were a complete violation of the principles of leadership and ethics as outlined in Kenya’s Constitution, particularly Chapter Six, which emphasizes integrity in public office.
Mutua noted that such utterances from a senior government official were not only disrespectful but also divisive at a time when the nation was mourning a respected statesman. He said Kenya’s leadership must reflect unity, empathy, and moral responsibility values that Kahiga’s remarks completely disregarded.
He further called on Kenyans to continue demanding accountability from leaders who misuse their positions for political or personal agendas. He said Kahiga must now resign from his position as a governor.
His statement sparked strong online reactions, with many Kenyans supporting his call for accountability and others suggesting that further disciplinary action should follow Kahiga’s resignation.
