Senior counsel and political analyst Wahome Thuku has warned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka over his 2027 presidential ambitions.
In a strongly worded statement, Wahome cautioned Kalonzo not to bank too much on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for national support in the run-up to the 2027 presidential election, particularly outside Mt Kenya region.
According to Thuku, Kalonzo may enjoy strong momentum in Mt Kenya as he will actively help him campaign there because of his influence.
He said that if Gachagua chooses to guide Kalonzo through the political terrain of the region, the rallies would be vibrant and impactful. However, Thuku stressed that this support would be limited geographically.
In Ukambani, Thuku argued Kalonzo must choose carefully whether to depend on Gachagua. He warned that any time Gachagua appears at a campaign event in the region, he tends to dominate the microphone and overshadow the host politician. This, he argued, complicates Kalonzo's efforts to consolidate his home ground support.
Beyond Mt Kenya and Ukambani, the lawyer insisted, Kalonzo will largely be on his own. He explained that Gachagua’s influence outside these regions is minimal and thus cannot be relied upon to deliver votes across the country.
Thuku advised Kalonzo to prepare for a bruising national campaign in which he must establish his own networks, develop his own messaging and directly persuade voters at the grassroots around the country.
