U.S President Donald Trump has revealed that the United States skipped the recent Climate Summit held in South Africa due to concerns over the country's human rights record.
In one strongly worded statement, Trump alleged that the South African government has failed to satisfactorily address issues affecting Afrikaners and other communities of European descent.
Trump said the US had pulled out because it did not agree with what he called the government's handling of property rights, security concerns, and the welfare of minority farming communities. He went ahead to accuse international media outlets of ignoring the situation.
Trump also claimed that South African officials refused to hand over the G20 Presidency to an attending representative from the U.S. Embassy during the closing ceremony, saying this move reflected ongoing diplomatic tension.
However, the claims by Trump were his personal opinion and have not been verified either by officials currently serving in the U.S. government or through independent investigations.
His comments have also stirred widespread debate internationally, with some questioning the political implications of the alleged diplomatic standoff and others calling for clarity to be provided by both governments over what happened in the summit.
