US President Donald Trump has said the reason for the United States skipping the G20 Summit held in South Africa was because of what he described as a refusal by the South African government to confront alleged human rights abuses against Afrikaners and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump alleged that white farmers in South Africa are facing targeted violence, land seizures and killings, a narrative that has been widely disputed by international observers and fact-checking organizations. He further accused major U.S. media outlets of ignoring what he referred to as “genocide.”
Trump also alleged that South Africa refused to turn over the G20 presidency to a senior representative of the U.S. Embassy during the close of the summit. For this reason, he declared that South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida.
In addition, Trump announced that all U.S. financial aid and subsidies to South Africa would be stopped “effective immediately,” citing that the country had proved it was not worthy of membership anywhere.
South African officials have yet to make an official response to Trump’s statement.
