Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stirred heated political debate on Sunday, when he claimed that most of Nairobi's political seats have been informally handed to his DCP party by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua, while speaking during a church service in Kariobangi, revealed that the emerging partnership forms what he describes as a new political re-alignment meant to restore fairness and representation in the capital.
In his address, Gachagua told congregants that Nairobi must no longer be controlled by what he termed power brokers in government, insisting that the city’s leadership should reflect the will of its residents.
He accused senior Kenya Kwanza figures of attempting to frustrate him politically after falling out with President Ruto.
Moments after he concluded the speech, chaos erupted outside the church when police officers lobbed teargas canisters, forcing worshippers to flee for safety.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society groups that accuse the government of intimidating Gachagua and infringing on freedom of worship and assembly.
While no official government statement has been made regarding the incident, the episode continues to heighten political tension amidst coalition realignments that are shaping up for 2027.
