Senior Sergeant Elly Oweno, attached to HPSS Embakasi, was fatally injured during a robbery at Asat Beach late at night.
According to reports, Oweno had just closed his shop and was walking home with a friend when they were ambushed by a group of men armed with pangas and other crude weapons.
Witnesses said one of the attackers shone a flashlight on their faces before the gang began slashing them on the head, neck, and hands. The assailants then grabbed a bag belonging to the soldier and fled on foot. Police said it remains unclear what was inside the stolen bag.
Both victims were rushed to hospital, but Oweno succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His body was later moved to the mortuary for an autopsy. The friend survived the attack and is admitted in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Police are following leads to track down the gang responsible for the murder and robbery.
Residents expressed fear over the growing number of attacks, noting that criminals often target people at night along poorly lit paths.
Authorities have intensified patrols and deployed more officers to hotspots in Kombewa and surrounding regions.
