Fresh details have emerged surrounding the final days of the late Beryl Lilian Achieng Odinga, revealing an unresolved rent dispute that has now drawn public attention.
Information shared by a source familiar with the matter indicates that Beryl Odinga had lived in a house along Mwangi Road in Kileleshwa from 2013 until her death earlier this month without paying rent to the property owner, a Rwandese national.
The landlord reportedly made several attempts over the years to recover the rent through auctioneers, but each effort was frustrated when officers from Kilimani Police Station allegedly denied the auctioneers access to the property.
Two days before Beryl Odinga passed away, auctioneers were finally allowed into the house, prompting Raila Odinga Junior to allegedly pay about KSh180,000 toward the outstanding rent.
Following her death, the landlord is said to have made another attempt to access the house to recover the remaining balance, but this effort was again unsuccessful.
Beryl Odinga had been serving as a board member at the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company. During her funeral service, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that her son would replace her on the board.
Sources say the landlord was informed that the outstanding rent balance would be settled after the burial. However, no payment has reportedly been made so far.
Senator Oburu Odinga, who is a senior member of the family, is said not to have taken steps to resolve the matter despite the earlier assurances.
The situation has sparked quiet concern among those aware of the dispute, especially given Beryl Odinga’s public service role and the involvement of law enforcement in blocking earlier recovery efforts.
As of now, the landlord is still waiting for the matter to be resolved, with questions lingering over why the rent dispute remains unsettled after her burial.
