Wahome Thuku Reveals How He Met With Jacque Maribe's Father And How He Came To Like Him

Senior lawyer Wahome Thuku has shared a touching story as he remembered the time he met the late Maribe Mwangi, the father of former journalist Jacque Maribe, after the difficult case of Jacque left an impression on his life.

Thuku revealed that he was one of the three lawyers who was with Jacque Maribe during the time when the system seemed determined to hold her in remand without the ability to pay bail or bond as a alternative way of releasing her freedom when the sentiments of the public were against her. According to Thuku, the lawyers, under the guidance of senior counsel Katwa Kigen, fought hard to see her released free.

It is in this period that Thuku claims to have gotten to know Jacque’s father, Maribe Mwangi. He described him as “quiet, resolute, and always with Jacque throughout every painful phase of this ordeal. I have seen him accompany Jacque through courts, holding cells, Lang’ata Women's Prison, and police stations, and even outside the courts.”

Jacque’s father would accompany her to wherever she had to go, whether it be inside or outside the courts and would be with her in prison.

While Thuku confirmed that he and Jacque had worked together within the media industry, he was quick to explain that his reason for supporting her defence team was a matter of a greater understanding of the situation, something that most people, according to him, had failed to grasp.

He also indicated that the manner of his inclusion in the defence team was a matter that would be discussed in his biographical account soon to be published.

Thuku added that even though Maribe Mwangi may be gone, his legacy shall live because of the lessons he taught parents to be there for their children in their darkest times and to fight for them until the very end.

He sent his condolences to Jacque Maribe and her family, relatives, and friends because the example she has been able to live out in honoring her father’s legacy is both encouraging and instructive.

He concluded by wishing the deceased peace, believing that he rests in peace in the Lord.
