Former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has sent a blunt and unapologetic message to the Mt Kenya region following UDA's clean sweep of all three by-elections held on the same day, using the results to reinforce a prediction he says he will keep making whether people like it or not.
UDA won all three contests. A 100 percent performance. For Kuria, the results are not just a win for the ruling party. They are data points that support an analytical model he has been presenting repeatedly in public spaces, one that leads to a conclusion that many in Mt Kenya find deeply uncomfortable.
William Ruto will be re-elected without a single vote from the Mountain. He said it plainly, without softening the edges.
Kuria's argument is built on what he calls the Tyranny of Small Numbers versus the Tyranny of Numbers. The idea is that Ruto's base across the Rift Valley, North Rift, Coast, North Eastern, and other regions is large enough, motivated enough, and registered in sufficient numbers to carry him to victory regardless of how Mt Kenya votes.
The three by-election victories, he argued, only strengthen that picture. And he made clear that he intends to keep repeating this message on a regular basis, even to those who find it irritating or unwelcome.
His closing words were directed squarely at the Mt Kenya region and carried the weight of someone who believes he has already seen how the story ends.
There will be crying and gnashing of teeth. It is a warning, a prediction, and a challenge all rolled into one, from a man who has never been shy about saying what others prefer to leave unsaid.
