The widow of the late veteran gynaecologist Dr. Job Obwaka has broken her silence, making devastating allegations that point directly at the highest office in the land as bearing responsibility for her husband's death.
Everrose Chemutai revealed that Dr. Obwaka had confided in her on multiple occasions that his life was in danger.
The threats, she said, were tied directly to the bitter power struggle over the control of the Nairobi Hospital, a battle that ultimately drew the government's attention and wrath toward the 83-year-old doctor.
In an emotional tribute to her late husband, Chemutai described the helplessness the family experienced following his dramatic arrest over allegations of falsified records.
She revealed that the family made efforts to have Dr. Obwaka released from police custody ahead of his court appearance, a request that would have been entirely reasonable given his age and deteriorating health but those efforts failed.
According to Chemutai, police officers handling the case were operating under strict instructions from State House. The family's pleas, she says, fell on ears that had already been told what to do and by whom.
The allegation is explosive. It places the origin of the pressure that was applied against Dr. Obwaka not with overzealous investigators or rogue officers, but with the presidency itself.
Lawyer Nelson Havi had earlier argued that the government's harassment of Dr. Obwaka directly accelerated his health decline and contributed to his untimely death.
Chemutai's account now adds a deeply personal and painful dimension to that claim, coming from the woman who watched her husband confide his fears to her, be denied his freedom, and ultimately lose his life.
She is demanding accountability, and she is not staying quiet.
