According to Thuku, the only figure who can mount a formidable challenge against President Ruto is former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i.
In a bold statement shared online, Thuku has argued that the opposition lacks a unifying, nationally acceptable candidate with the strength, organisational capacity and credibility needed to face an incumbent president.
He says that whereas a number of leaders are positioning themselves for the 2027 race, none of them currently possesses the combination of influence, experience and public confidence commanded by Matiang’i.
Thuku pointed at Matiang'i's past record in government, his reputation for firmness and administrative efficiency as factors that could make him a strong contender against Ruto.
His remarks have elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans. Supporters of Matiang’i insist he has the leadership qualities to revive the opposition and offer a serious alternative to Kenya Kwanza. Critics, however, argue that Matiang’i has kept a low political profile since 2022, making his comeback uncertain.
Still, Wahome Thuku insists that if the opposition is serious about making President Ruto a one term leader, Matiang’i remains their strongest bet.
